THE JOURNEY OF CONFERENCE OF MAJOR RELIGIOUS SUPERIORS OF ZIMBABWE (CMRS – ZW)

By Christine Masivo

The Conference of Major Religious Superiors of Zimbabwe (CMRS – ZW) stands as a beacon of collaboration and service within the religious community of Zimbabwe. Originally established for religious women, its evolution to include male religious leaders has enriched its impact on the religious landscape of the country.
The seeds of this unity were sown in 1988 when men and women religious superiors began holding joint meetings, laying the groundwork for a more inclusive conference. The formal merger occurred in 2003, resulting in the birth of the CMRS – ZW. Recognized and supported by the Holy See, the conference’s statutes were approved in 2010, cementing its status as a vital institution within the Catholic community.

Collaborating closely with the Zimbabwe Catholic Bishops Conference (ZCBC), the CMRS – ZW has undertaken a range of activities aimed at addressing social and political challenges. From issuing statements on the country’s political climate to organizing prayer sessions for peace, the conference has demonstrated a commitment to promoting justice and reconciliation.
Central to its mission is the promotion of vocation, religious formation, and apostolic collaboration. Through initiatives such as catechesis, vocational training, and empowerment programs, the CMRS – ZW equips its members to serve effectively in various apostolates, from education to domestic work.

The conference’s dedication to the holistic development of its members is evident in its investment in training facilities like Wadzanai, which provides academic and professional education for sisters. By nurturing the talents and skills of its members, the CMRS – ZW empowers them to contribute meaningfully to the growth and development of their communities.
Rooted in gospel values, the CMRS – ZW is guided by principles of prayerfulness, collaboration, unity in diversity, integrity, and service. Its vision of witnessing to God’s kingdom on earth through collaborative service reflects a deep commitment to the mission of the Church and the well-being of society.
In essence, the Conference of Major Religious Superiors of Zimbabwe embodies the spirit of unity, service, and faith, serving as a testament to the transformative power of collaboration in building God’s kingdom.
