In the wake of unprecedented global challenges, the Loyola Centre for Media and Communications (LCMC) recently participated in the UN Civil Society Conference 2024, marking a significant step in preparation for the Summit of the Future. LCMC, dedicated to empowering young people through advocating for children’s environmental rights, continues to align its mission with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), emphasizing the importance of youth resilience in the face of climate change and technological advancements.
The 75th anniversary of the United Nations came at a time when the world was grappling with the shared threats of the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change. These challenges, coupled with the risks and opportunities presented by technological advances, highlighted a stagnation in the progress towards achieving the SDGs. In response to these global trends and our unprecedented interconnectedness, Member States pledged to strengthen global governance and tasked the Secretary-General with providing recommendations to address both current and future challenges (A/RES/75/1).

The Secretary-General’s report, “Our Common Agenda,” called for solidarity among people, countries, and generations. It emphasized a renewal of the multilateral system to accelerate the implementation of existing commitments and fill gaps in global governance that have emerged since 2015. Among the key proposals was the convening of a Summit of the Future, envisioned as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to address these pressing issues.

Towards the Summit of the Future

Scheduled for September 2024, the Summit of the Future aims to build on the outcomes of the 2023 SDG Summit. Its primary goal is to establish an inter-governmentally negotiated, action-oriented Pact for the Future. This pact will encompass five critical chapters: sustainable development and financing for development; international peace and security; science, technology, and innovation; digital cooperation; youth and future generations; and transforming global governance.
In preparation for the Summit, the Secretary-General issued eleven Policy Briefs, providing detailed proposals from “Our Common Agenda” to support Member States in their deliberations. These documents serve as a roadmap for achieving the comprehensive goals set forth for the Summit.

LCMC’s Role in Advocating for Children's Environmental Rights

At the UN Civil Society Conference 2024, LCMC showcased its ongoing efforts to promote children’s environmental rights, a crucial aspect of the SDGs. By focusing on empowering young people, LCMC aims to foster resilience and ensure that future generations are equipped to tackle environmental challenges head-on.
LCMC’s participation in the conference underscores its commitment to engaging with global stakeholders and contributing to the broader dialogue on sustainable development. The organization’s work aligns with the overarching theme of the Summit of the Future, which emphasizes the need for intergenerational solidarity and a renewed focus on youth empowerment.

Powering Youth Resilience

LCMC’s initiatives are designed to educate and empower young people, providing them with the tools and knowledge necessary to advocate for environmental rights. By fostering a sense of responsibility and resilience, LCMC aims to create a generation of informed and proactive individuals capable of driving sustainable change.
