During the Synod on Synodality sessions on Sunday, October 20, 2024, in Rome, discussions focused on some pivotal issues shaping the future of the Church. One significant topic was the ongoing push for greater inclusion of women in Church governance. The presence of women in voting roles and leadership positions, such as Sr. Nathalie Becquart, highlighted the Church's gradual opening to a broader participation of women. This is seen as a response to long-standing calls for more gender inclusivity, with Pope Francis enabling more women to have a voice in these crucial discussions.
The synod also addressed how the Church can further embody "synodality," which is defined as walking together in communion, participation, and mission. The conversation around balancing traditional teachings with modern-day pastoral needs continued, touching on sensitive subjects like the role of laypeople and how to foster greater unity within the Church amidst diverse cultural and theological perspectives.
Pope Francis emphasized that the synod should not be seen as a political arena, but rather as a space for listening to the Holy Spirit and building a Church that can better serve its mission in a changing world.
