During the Synod on Synodality sessions in Rome on October 19, 2024, discussions focused on the topic of clerical celibacy. Proposals were made to allow married priests in certain regions, especially in areas with a shortage of clergy, like the Amazon. Another crucial topic was the role of bishops and laypeople in maintaining transparency and accountability within the Church, particularly in light of the sexual abuse crises and diminishing trust in Church leadership.

Pope Francis emphasized the need to avoid personal agendas and focus on discerning the Holy Spirit’s guidance for the Church's future. The synod sessions continued the theme of listening to different voices, promoting synodality as a way for the Church to better respond to contemporary challenges.
