Young African Catholics are raising their voices on the importance of their involvement in the
Church’s synodal process. They feel that, too often, their perspectives are left out of serious
conversations about Church life and direction. In their view, a vibrant future for the Church in
Africa depends on meaningful participation, where youth concerns are addressed, youth
leadership is encouraged, and digital spaces are embraced.
Focusing on Issues That Matter to Young People.
One of the core requests from young Catholics is that the Church tackles issues that directly
affect their lives. Topics such as unemployment, for example, weigh heavily on young adults
across the continent. They believe that if the Church were to engage in conversations on job
creation and economic opportunities, it would naturally draw their interest and support. As
Teresia Muia, a young Catholic from Nairobi, explains, "The Church needs to address the issues
we face, like unemployment, in ways that show it understands our struggles and is willing to
walk with us." Addressing contemporary issues; particularly those that resonate with young
people’s realities would not only attract youth participation but also strengthen their sense of
belonging within the Church..
Enabling Youth Leadership.
Young Catholics also emphasize the need for genuine leadership opportunities within the
Church. Many feel that youth are seldom allowed to take on roles that would enable them to
contribute significantly to Church matters. Allowing young people to step into leadershippositions would not only be an empowering experience but would also show them that their
insights are valued. Teresia Muia shares, "It’s my plea that the Church allows young people to
lead and hold positions in the Church, as it’s a way of building their confidence in discussing
matters of the Church.".
By building their confidence and enabling them to participate in decision-making processes, the
Church could foster a generation of future leaders deeply invested in its mission..
Embracing Digital Spaces
Recognizing the importance of digital platforms, young Catholics urge the Church to be present
and active in online spaces. For many, social media is where they feel most comfortable
engaging and expressing themselves. “I think this is the right time the Church comes on board to
be on digital spaces because that is our world and that is where we feel comfortable discussing
issues,” remarked Teresia Muia.
Platforms like Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and TikTok provide ideal spaces for the Church to
connect with young people on their terms, reaching them in places where they are already
present and engaged. Such digital presence could create an open, dynamic dialogue and give
youth the confidence to share their perspectives.
Conclusion
In conclusion, young African Catholics yearn for a Church that is accessible, inclusive, and
willing to evolve. By addressing relevant issues, encouraging youth leadership, and engaging in
digital spaces, the Church can secure a vibrant and engaged future generation. As Teresia Muia
puts it, "Let’s work together to make this vision a reality."
