ABOUT THE SOCIAL JUSTICE PROJECT

Loyola Centre for Media and Communications (LCMC), an apostolate of the Jesuits in Eastern Africa, implements social justice by nurturing resilient, value-driven children, youth, and communities especially in marginalized contexts. Through education in rights, value formation, spiritual development, and creative media, LCMC empowers young people to understand, articulate, and act upon issues that affect them.
Key interventions include training in schools and communities on rights and social issues such as gender-based violence, FGM, child abuse, early marriage, and substance abuse. LCMC uses participatory, arts-based methods (drama, storytelling, poetry, debate, visual media) to give children voices and agency. It also engages educators, parents, and community leaders to build local ownership and sustain social justice efforts.
A distinctive feature is its production of media content (audio, video, drama) that not only educates but advocates. These productions have been used in schools and by civil society organisations. LCMC also works on environmental justice, integrating awareness of ecological responsibilities, advocacy, and sustainable development goals in its programs.
Furthermore, LCMC is investing in capacity-building, including training in digital tools and media literacy (including AI), to ensure both young people and those around them can sustain and scale social justice work. Through this multifaceted approach, LCMC contributes meaningfully to cultivating a culture of non-violence, dignity, inclusion, and moral integrity.
